Reg Meuross: Stolen From God - Middleton Hall, Hull

REG MEUROSS TAKES STOLEN FROM GOD ON OCTOBER TOUR FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Acclaimed songwriter's deeply researched live song cycle exploring England's role in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people visits five venues across England, bringing together folk song, live narration, concertina and West African kora.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Reg Meuross takes Stolen From God back on the road this October, touring the powerful live song cycle for the fourth consecutive Black History Month.

Stolen From God grew from more than four years of research into England's involvement in the transatlantic trade in enslaved people and the ways that history remains embedded in churches, country estates, ports, family trees, parish records and inherited wealth.

Through original songs, live narration and the distinctive meeting of English folk instrumentation with West African kora, the performance brings those histories into the concert hall through the stories of sailors and merchants, vicars and politicians, enslaved people, abolitionists and resistance.

The songs range across figures including John Hawkins, Edward Colston and Olaudah Equiano, while asking broader questions about Empire, wealth, faith, exploitation and the stories Britain chooses to remember.

"Years of writing and research have revealed to me some remarkable stories of defiance and bravery, courage and endurance," says Meuross. "As my research for Stolen From God progressed, I realised how little I knew about Black History in Britain; how little I'd been taught growing up; how little I knew of Empire and how it was made.

"I hope with my songs and this project to make a useful contribution by bringing some light to a complex issue, and another way of hearing these stories."

The work has already attracted striking reviews. The Guardian called the album "ambitious, often unsettling", Americana UK described it as "one of the best folk albums I've heard in a long time", and BBC Radio Scotland's Iain Anderson said Meuross had "never made a more important or more deeply considered and researched album".

Across five performances in Bridgwater, Aldershot, Birmingham, Hull and Todmorden, Meuross is joined by concertina virtuoso Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and kora player and griot Modou Ndiaye Cissokho. Selected dates also feature guest narrators, including acclaimed author and broadcaster Jeffrey Boakye in Hull.

Stolen From God was first released as an album in 2023 after Meuross began researching the project in 2018. The live production has since developed into a concert experience built around the songs, musicianship and narration, with the combination of concertina and kora giving the work a musical language that reaches between English folk traditions and West African musical heritage.
